County animal control officers confiscated at least 33 cats and one dog two weeks ago at the home of a woman who lived just south of Inverness. Animal Control director Xan Rawls was out of the office Monday and unavailable for comment. But according to an incident report and a memo Rawls wrote praising employee Paul Gillum's handling of the situation, the department was called to the home by someone concerned about the animals' welfare. Officers found the animals were living in unsanitary conditions. The home's occupant, whose name is being withheld by the Times because of the circumstances of the case, is now in the care of her family. The number of cats confiscated might have been as high as 40, according to the documents.
