Candidates file papers for Zephyrhills council

(ran PC edition)

First-term incumbent and current City Council President Lance Smith has drawn a challenger in the race for Seat 4.

Regina King, 39028 Martin Luther King Ave., filed papers this week to run.

Municipal elections are set for April 13.

King could not be reached for comment Wednesday.

Seat 2 on the council and the mayor's job also are on the ballot.

Rj Morgan, a retiree, has filed to run for Seat 2, citing opposition to the renaming of Sixth Avenue to honor the Rev. Martin Luther King Jr. as his entire platform.

Current member Liz Geiger, a six-term veteran who voted for the name change, is undecided about running.

Mayor Cliff McDuffie is seeking a second term. He has one challenger, longtime resident and veteran Louie Collandria.

The qualifying period for municipal elections runs from noon Feb. 10 through noon Feb. 17. Qualifying requires a $25 fee and the signatures of 25 registered Zephyrhills voters.
