Stephan Eberharter won the World Cup's most prestigious downhill in Kitzbuehel, Austria. Eberharter covered the Streif course in 1 minute, 55.48 seconds. He was 1.21 seconds faster than Daron Rahlves, the American who won last year. World champion Anja Paerson of Sweden won her second giant slalom of the season in Maribor, Slovenia, in a combined 2:18.27 and returned to first place in the overall standings.
SPEED SKATING: Erben Wennemars and Marianne Timmer led a Dutch sweep with victories in 1,000-meter races at the World Cup event in Beijing. Wennemars won in 1:10.09. Teammate Gerard van Velde (1:10.39) was second, and Kip Carpenter of the United States finished third (1:10.60). Timmer finished in 1:17.71.
MOTORCYCLE: Evel Knievel, 65, who is recovering in Tampa from lower back surgery, has called off his final football field-length jump in June at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas.
