Armwood defensive star Hicks off to ECU

Published Aug. 27, 2005

Armwood defensive guard Fred Hicks, who led the 2003 state championship Hawks' defensive line in tackles, orally committed to East Carolina.

The 5-foot-11, 275-pounder was a team captain for three years and was named to the Class 4A all-state first team. He finished his senior season with 105 tackles, 11 sacks and two fumble recoveries for touchdowns.

Like his Armwood teammates Jake Griffin, Jariette Buie and Mike Williams, Hicks received an offer from South Florida. He made it clear he was interested in going out of state early in the recruiting process, though.

"East Carolina was just a good fit for me," Hicks said. "It's far but not too far, and the surrounding town is kind of built around the college, which I liked."

Hicks was also being recruited by Louisville and Ball State.
