One day. One shot. One opportunity to reach state. That's what area athletes faced in Saturday's sectional qualifying meet in Marion County. Only the top three lifters in each division advanced to state.

"Whatever you did on (Saturday) was it," Lecanto coach Dick Slack said.

Here's who made it:

+ Citrus had five advance _ Stephanie Bass (Sr., 169), Katie Bombley (So., 129), Norma Jean Carlile (Sr., 139), Maggie Lanigan (Sr., 154) and Ashley Rawls (Sr., 154). Bass and Carlile won their divisions.

"We really should have done a little better," Hurricanes coach Doug Patton said. "We did okay, but I'm not completely satisfied."

+ Crystal River had two advance _ Quincy Wilson (Fr., 169) and Racheal Reed (So., 110).

+ Sara Lavertu (So., 199) of Lecanto was the lone Panther to qualify.

This was the first year of the sectional qualifier format. In past seasons, athletes needed only to lift a predetermined weight in any regular-season meet to advance. "This took them by shock," Crystal River coach Charles Brooks said.

The regular season isn't over. The Gulf Coast Athletic Conference meet is Thursday at Citrus.
