Rupert F. "Sandy" Bowron has been named the new director of the St. Petersburg Veterans Affairs regional office at Bay Pines.
The appointment completes a realignment of the top management positions at the St. Petersburg office. Two assistant directors also were appointed during 2003: Terry A. Berube and Kerrie L. Witty.
Bowron, 57, previously directed the Office of Performance Analysis and Integrity in Washington, D.C.
A native of Eustis, Bowron has more than 33 years of government service, including five years in the U.S. Air Force. He was the assistant director of the St. Petersburg Regional Office from 1997 to 2001. He also has held management positions at VA regional offices in New Orleans and Atlanta.
He was named federal manager of the year in 1996 by the New Orleans Federal Executive Board.
A veteran of the Vietnam War, Bowron served as a B-52 bombardier and navigational instructor. Much of his time was in Southeast Asia, where he received the Distinguished Flying Cross.
Bowron holds a bachelor's degree from the University of Miami and master's degrees in business administration and professional accountancy from Georgia State University. He also is a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute.
He and his wife, Rachel, live in St. Petersburg. Bowron is the 12th person to head the regional office since it opened in 1933.
