Sara Lavertu / Panthers weightlifting

The junior might be a first-year performer but was the only Lecanto athlete to qualify for state in last weekend's sectional meet in Marion County. Lavertu, who competes in the 199-pound division, has a season-best total of 295 pounds (165 bench press, 130 clean). She also plays softball and is a member of the track and field team.

Q: If you could be a star for a day, whom would you chose to be?

SL: Sandra Bullock.

Q: Why her?

SL: Because of the way she acts and because she's so carefree. She's very funny. She just seems like a good person.

Q: If you were chosen to be on The Real Word, in which city would you want the show to be set?

SL: Honolulu. I'd like to travel to Hawaii.

Q: What is the toughest class you've ever taken?

SL: I don't know. I get A's and B's in everything. Math probably is the hardest. It doesn't click in my head sometimes.

Q: What's in your CD player?

SL: It has all kind of music on it, like rap and rock.

Q: What kind of outfit would you not be caught dead wearing?

SL: A full-body pleather suit.

Q: If you could eat lunch alone with the president, what would you say to him?

SL: Why did you decide to go to war?

Q: Can you find Iraq on a map?

SL: Yes (laughing), as long as it has Iraq written on it.

Q: What do you eat before a meet?

SL: Fruits and protein.

Q: What's the greatest thing about weightlifting?

SL: Lifting gives me a thrill. I love to compete. And you get to take your mind off things when you're mad.
