Suit says restaurant reneged on coupons

(ran PC edition)

A company that produces discount coupon books sued a popular Land O'Lakes restaurant, claiming the business won't honor a 2-for-1 dinner coupon.

But Ben Pumo, who runs the restaurant, Benedetto's Italiano, said he has been honoring the coupons for nearly a year, but that he specified they were not to be valid Friday and Saturday nights, his busiest.

Entertainment Publications Operating Co. Inc. sued Tuesday in Circuit Court asking a judge to order the restaurant to honor coupons offering diners a free entree, valued up to $14, with the purchase of a second entree.

Pumo said Tuesday that he signed up for the promotion last year with an understanding that proceeds would benefit local schools, only to be disappointed that a smaller than anticipated percentage goes to schools.

He said he also was disappointed that despite his specification that coupons would be valid for early birds, 4:30-6 p.m., Sundays through Thursdays, no mention of the restrictions is on the coupon.

As a compromise, Pumo said he agreed to honor coupons any time Sundays through Thursdays, but not on Fridays or Saturdays.

He said he was surprised by the lawsuit and has turned the case over to an attorney.
