Mayor to honor Ybor City artist

Dr. Ferdie Pacheco, who captured Ybor City's colorful immigrant history in his paintings and books, will be honored today by Tampa Mayor Pam Iorio, who has declared Friday as "Ferdie Pacheco Day" in Tampa. Pacheco grew up in Ybor City and gained fame as Muhammad Ali's fight doctor. During his boxing career, Pacheco worked with several champions and won two Emmy Awards for his televised boxing commentary. He will talk about his life and work during a reception outside the Pacheco Gallery, 1600 E Eighth Ave., at 5 p.m. today. At noon on Friday, he will be the speaker at the Four Seasons Author Series, sponsored by the Friends of the Library Hillsborough Inc. Today's reception is free and open to the public.
