Weather service issues freeze warning

The National Weather Service issued a freeze warning for Citrus and surrounding counties between 1 and 8 a.m. today. The warning also is in effect for Hernando, Sumter and Levy counties. Temperatures are expected to be around freezing between 1 and 3 a.m. and drop into the upper 20s about dawn.

Family issues may delay murder trial

INVERNESS _ The murder trial of James Utsey could be postponed yet again. Utsey is scheduled to stand trial in Brooksville starting Monday, but Assistant State Attorney Don Scaglione has asked a judge for a delay. In court documents, the prosecutor cited family issues that had arisen for both the defense attorney and the state's witnesses as reasons for rescheduling the trial. Circuit Judge Ric A. Howard will consider the motion today.

Public defender appointed in drug case

INVERNESS _ Circuit Judge Ric A. Howard appointed a public defender Wednesday to represent Lonnie Thomas Arnold, who was arrested last month on charges of possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia. Arnold, 38, was with County Commission Chairman Josh Wooten's wife in Floral City at the time of his Dec. 7 arrest. His next court appearance is scheduled for Feb. 25.


BEVERLY HILLS _ Maria Schmidt, a registered nurse and state-certified instructor of Alzheimer's care, will present "Remaining Safely at Home With Dementia: When They Keep Running Away From Home" at 1 p.m. today at Fero Memorial Hall, 5955 N Lecanto Highway (County Road 491).
