18-year-old killed, two injured in head-on crash

An 18-year-old New Port Richey man was killed Thursday in a head-on crash with another car on State Road 52, according to the Florida Highway Patrol.

A news release said Daniel N. Jensen was driving a 1989 Chevrolet west on SR 52, west of County Road 581, and went left of the center line about 2 p.m.

Rolland E. Johnson, 73, of Zephyrhills, was driving east in a Ford pickup and attempted to avoid Jensen, the report said, but the two vehicles hit head on.

Jensen, who was not wearing a seat belt, died as a result, the release said.

Johnson and a passenger, Rose Mary Johnson, also 73, were taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

Jensen's stepfather said he worked as a caterer at Saddlebrook Resort and was driving home after a long shift. Carlos Rodriguez said an FHP trooper told him his stepson apparently fell asleep at the wheel. Jensen at one time attended River Ridge High School but graduated from a school in upstate New York, Rodriguez said. "He was the perfect kid _ fun-loving, smart, ambitious," he said.
