Boy claims he found drug, intended to turn it in

The 11-year-old Gorrie Elementary School fifth-grader who was arrested Wednesday for bringing marijuana to school said he found the drug.

Tampa police spokesman Joe Durkin said the boy told investigators he found a bag with 16 grams of marijuana near Lemon Street and Delaware Avenue while waiting on his bus before school.

He said he had planned to give administrators the marijuana.

The boy showed the marijuana to a classmate before school. The classmate told an assistant principal, who alerted law enforcement. He was arrested 30 minutes into the school day and taken to the Juvenile Assessment Center.

"If it was his intent to turn it in, he had plenty of time to do that," Durkin said. "He turned it in only after someone else told."

The boy, whose name was not released, has been charged with a misdemeanor. He was suspended for 10 days and most likely will be transferred to an alternative education program.
