Court won't stop execution of Plant City woman's killer

The state Supreme Court on Thursday rejected the appeal of a death row inmate scheduled to be executed next week for the murder of a Plant City woman 19 years ago.

The unsigned unanimous decision came a day after the high court heard oral arguments.

Beverly St. George was traveling from Plant City to Virginia in August 1985 when her car broke down on Interstate 95 in northern Florida. Johnny Robinson drove up, took her prisoner at gunpointand took her back to his car.

She was raped, then shot twice in the head. Her body was found in a cemetery the next day.

A defense lawyer argued Wednesday that Robinson's conviction and death sentence should be thrown out because a mentally retarded teenager who testified later changed his story.

Robinson, 51, is to be executed Wednesday at 6 p.m.
