Robbery suspect killed, while partner is arrested

A series of bank robberies committed by a man and a woman in the Carrollwood area came to an end last Friday with the death of the man and the arrest of the woman, authorities said.

After robbing the First National Bank at 8809 W Waters Ave., suspect Brian McPhee, 41, was shot and killed by a sheriff's deputy. McPhee's partner, Catherine Flynn, 41, was taken to jail.

Aside from last Friday's robbery, McPhee is a suspect in three other bank robberies in the Carrollwood area from Jan. 14 to Jan. 22, at an AmSouth Bank and at two SunTrust locations, according to Hillsborough County sheriff's officials.

Flynn, 902 N Bay St., is charged with three of the four bank robberies.

Last Friday afternoon, the couple walked into the First National Bank and handed a demand note to a teller, authorities said. They left the bank in a 1982 Toyota belonging to McPhee.

Sheriff's Deputy Steve Favors saw the Toyota while he was at Hillsborough Avenue and Memorial Highway. He saw the car go behind a drug store and reappear on Memorial Highway.

Favors, who was driving an unmarked Ford, ended up in front of the Toyota. He put his car in park, got out and confronted McPhee at gunpoint. Favors ordered McPhee to keep his hands on the steering wheel.

McPhee reached down between the seats and was bringing his hand up when, authorities say, Favors fired several rounds from his .45 caliber handgun. The Toyota sped off. It hit mailboxes and bushes, made a U-turn and headed back toward Favors.

Favors fired more shots. McPhee was pronounced dead at the scene. Flynn was uninjured.

Sheriff's spokesman Lt. Rod Reder said Flynn was charged with participating in robbing the First National Bank as well as a SunTrust Bank on Jan. 20 and another SunTrust Bank on Jan. 22. Flynn is being held without bail in the Hillsborough County jail.
