OVERHEARD

"It's disconcerting, certainly. Is our elementary a hot bed of drug activity? I seriously doubt it."

_ Pamela Eliopulos, mother of a student at Gorrie Elementary School, where a fifth grader was charged with misdemeanor possession of marijuana.

"If it wasn't for people like you, instead of running a jail I might be in jail."

_ Hillsborough sheriff's Maj. Elaine White at a Leadership Tampa Alumni luncheon. White, who grew up in a migrant camp and is now division commander of the Orient Road Jail, received the Parke Wright III Award, given to a Leadership Tampa member who makes a significant difference in the community.

"They recognize some of the music from cartoons."

_ Seffner Elementary teacher Emilsa Stas, on concerts the Florida Orchestra performed for thousands of fourth- and fifth-graders.

"Then I was like, I gotta save that guy." Justin Gregorich, the 14-year-old from Safety Harbor, who ran and jumped into the water without hesitation to help 82-year-old Raymond J. Kane of Orlando after the elderly driver's car crashed through a fence and started sinking in a retention pond.
