Replacements on way?

The NBA will hire replacement officials if it does not reach an agreement on a new labor contract with the referees union by early next week. Training camp for officials begins Oct. 1. The league and the National Basketball Referees Association are negotiating a five-year contract to replace the one that expired Sept. 1.

OTHER NBA:

The NBA champion Pistons are making 3,500 seats available for their opener through a lottery on Oct. 1. They play the Rockets on Nov. 2.

CYCLING: Italian rider Alessandro Petacchi won the 13th stage of the Spanish Vuelta in a sprint. Defending champion Roberto Heras remained the overall leader, and U.S. rider Tyler Hamilton dropped out because of stomach problems.
