The Court of Arbitration for Sport will hear an appeal Sept.27 from South Korean gymnast Yang Tae-young , who lost the all-around title to American Paul Hamm because of a scoring error.

HEARING: Sally Robbins, who stopped rowing 500 meters from the finish in the women's eights final, was slapped by a teammate Thursday. Catriona Oliver faces a disciplinary hearing next week after striking Robbins on the shoulder at an Australian Olympic Committee gathering in Sydney.

TENNIS

Open champ advances

U.S. Open champion Svetlana Kuznetsova moved into the semifinals with a 7-5, 6-1 victory over Angelique Widjaja at the Wismilak International in Bali, Indonesia. Kuznetsova plays Nadia Petrova.

OTHER TOURNAMENTS: Fifth-seeded Marat Safin cruised to a 6-2, 6-4 win over Kevin Kim and advanced to the semifinal against Jarkko Nieminen at the China Open in Beijing. Florian Mayer beat former champion David Ferrer 6-4, 6-2 in the Romania Open quarterfinals in Bucharest. The second seed plays fourth-seeded Igor Andreev. Third-seeded Mario Ancic beat Kenneth Carlsen 6-2, 7-5 to reach the semifinals of the Millennium International Championships in Delray Beach. He faces Ricardo Mello.

PRO BASKETBALL

OTHER NBA: The Jazz's exhibition game in Russia next month was canceled because of security concerns. The league and the team hope to reschedule for next preseason.

WNBA: Crystal Robinson scored a season-high 22 and paced a 12-0 run that helped visiting New York gain a playoff berth with a 69-66 victory over Connecticut. Adrienne Goodson and LaToya Thomas each scored 22 as host San Antonio beat Charlotte 82-65 and prevented it from clinching a playoff spot.

COLLEGES

Tide swimmer dies

Alabama swimmer Bernardo Romero died Wednesday after battling leukemia. He returned to DCH Medical Center in Tuscaloosa three weeks ago following a period of remission and was put on a respirator Tuesday after contracting pneumonia.

SOCCER: Stephanie Freeman scored as the host Florida women beat Rutgers 1-0. Julia Schnugg had the winner as host Florida State wins its third straight 2-1. The USF men shut out SMU 3-0 at the USF/Holiday Inn Invitational.

TENNIS: The Florida men beat Mississippi State in all five singles matches at the Gator Invitational. USF split its singles matches 3-all with Miami. The UF women swept Kentucky in singles and won two of three in doubles at the Gator Fall Classic.

VOLLEYBALL: Jane Collymore finished with a match-high 21 kills as host Florida beat Clemson 36-34, 30-20, 30-14. Florida Gulf Coast downed visiting Saint Leo 30-16, 30-14, 30-8.

ARENA FOOTBALL: Storm coach Tim Marcum guarantees a training camp roster spot to at least one player from an open tryout from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. today at Peppin-Rood Stadium on the campus of the University of Tampa. Registration begins at 9 a.m. Cost is $65. Checks will not be accepted. Participants should bring a T-shirt, shorts and grass cleats.
