A Hillsborough County sheriff's deputy shot and killed a dog Sunday morning when it attacked his canine partner, Bud, officials said.
Deputy James St. Pearre and Bud arrived at 9017 County Line Road about 10 a.m. to search a residence for two suspects in an attempted murder case, sheriff's spokesman Lt. Albert Frost said.
When they arrived, a dog on the property attacked Bud. Pearre tried hitting the dog to get it off Bud, but the dogs kept fighting, deputies said.
Frost said Pearre then pulled out his gun and fired it at the dog, killing it. Bud was taken to a Pasco County veterinarian. The injuries were not life threatening.
No deputies were injured, Frost said. The suspects were not found.
