BRINGING BRONSON HOME

One in a series of regular reports on the progress of Boston Red Sox pitcher and Hernando graduate Bronson Arroyo:

RECENT OUTINGS: In an otherwise lousy trip to the Bronx, Arroyo did his part with six innings of two-run ball Friday, striking out three and walking one. He did not get the decision, but the Sox came back to win 3-2.

PLAYOFF CHASE: The Red Sox (89-59 through Sunday) lost Saturday and Sunday to the Yankees to fall 4{ games back in the American League East. The Sox lead Anaheim by 5{ games in the wild-card race.

STAT OF THE WEEK: Arroyo has a better innings-to-home-runs-allowed ratio (one every 10.2 innings pitched) than teammates Curt Schilling (one every 9.2 innings) and Pedro Martinez (one every 8.2 innings).

NOTABLE: Arroyo is scheduled to pitch this week against Baltimore, against whom he never has started.

WHAT THEY'RE SAYING: "He should have 12 or 13 wins right now. Those Wiffle-ball curveballs are unhitable," teammate Derek Lowe said on Espn.com. Catcher Jason Varitek said Arroyo changes speeds and arm angles on both of his breaking balls, giving a look unlike any other pitcher.
