Deputies are investigating the death of a dog whose headless body was found on the side of a road.
A passer-by saw the dog Sunday afternoon in the 10200 block of Blossom Lake Drive and called Pinellas sheriff's deputies. The pure-bred shelty was wearing a light blue harness and leash, but no identification could be found. The dog's head also was missing, said Beth Lockwood, executive director of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Pinellas County.
Deputies took a report and talked to neighbors but found no one who knew the dog or its owner. Sheriff's deputies have classified the dog's death as a potential case of animal cruelty.
Anyone with information about the dog can call the SPCA at 586-3591.
