Edwards to discuss health care, raise funds in Tampa

Democratic vice presidential candidate John Edwards is set to appear in Tampa today to talk about health care and raise money for the Democratic party.

In the afternoon, the North Carolina senator will hold a town hall-style meeting for invited guests at the National Association of Letter Carriers on W Cypress Street. He will then head to a $1,000-per person Democratic National Committee fundraiser at the Wyndham Westshore hotel.

Presidential candidate John Kerry, meanwhile, will be in Jacksonville Tuesday afternoon, and then unite with Edwards in Orlando for a public rally at the TD Waterhouse Center. They plan to continue campaigning Wednesday in West Palm Beach and Miami.

Motorcyclist killed after colliding with semitrailer

TAMPA _ A motorcycle collided with a semitrailer truck Sunday night, killing the rider, the Hillsborough Sheriff's Office said.

Bryan Patrick Yoakum, 28, was riding a 1997 Suzuki motorcycle south on Sheldon Road about 10:40 p.m. when he approached Patterson Street, according to a sheriff's office report.

Donald Thomas, 39, was turning his 1998 International semi left onto Patterson Street.

Yoakum skidded more than 200 feet before colliding with the semi's undercarriage. Yoakum died at the scene.

Tampa pedestrian struck by car, dies at the scene

TAMPA _ A 47-year-old Tampa man was struck by a vehicle and killed Sunday night as he tried to cross Hillsborough Avenue east of Ambassador Drive.

Pierre Russell was walking north outside of a crosswalk and had just passed the median about 10 p.m. when he was hit by a westbound 1996 Nissan Pathfinder, according to a Hillsborough Sheriff's Office report.

The driver of the Pathfinder, Alexander Brito, 25, of Tampa, was in the inside lane when he hit Russell. Russell died at the scene.
