R.I.P, GCAC?

Looks like a little history will be made tonight as Citrus and Hernando County teams square off in games with no conference implications. In the wake of Citrus' highly-controversial abandonment of the Gulf Coast Athletic Conference, if Springstead and Central can take out all of Hernando's frustrations on the field it will be a long night for home fans at Crystal River and Lecanto.

TONIGHT'S GAMES

SPRINGSTEAD (2-0) AT LECANTO (0-2)

WHEN: 7:30 p.m.

LAST YEAR: Springstead 43, Lecanto 7.

THE SKINNY: The Panthers have lost one game by a little to a bad team (12-7 at Lake Weir) and one by a ton to a good team (70-13 last week at South Sumter). Springstead: good team. Even with a bigger game looming next week in Groveland South Lake, the Eagles cruise here.

SCHWARB'S PICK: Springstead.

NIPPS'S PICK: Springstead.

HERNANDO (1-2) AT PASCO (0-2)

WHEN: 7:30 p.m.

LAST YEAR: Pasco 17, Hernando 13.

THE SKINNY: Perhaps the Leopards will have some good Pasco County karma going, traveling south again after last week's 30-20 win at Ridgewood. Hernando running back Chad Sanders has over 500 yards rushing, and another big night could go a long way toward breaking a four-game skid to the Pirates.

SCHWARB'S PICK: Pasco.

NIPPS'S PICK: Pasco.

CENTRAL (1-1) AT CRYSTAL RIVER (0-1)

WHEN: 7:30 p.m.

LAST YEAR: Crystal River 23, Central 20.

THE SKINNY: Crystal River's loss to Citrus last week was the shocker of the year in Citrus County. Come to think of it, maybe that's why the county pulled out of the GCAC. Crystal River doesn't have enough to win the conference title anymore.

SCHWARB'S PICK: Central.

NIPPS'S PICK: Central.

NATURE COAST TECH (1-1) AT NORTH PORT (0-2)

WHEN: 7:30 p.m.

THE SKINNY: The Sharks need a team plane for all these road trips, from Frostproof last week to North Port tonight to Naples next week. A little luck might help too against the Class 3A school.

SCHWARB'S PICK: North Port.

NIPPS'S PICK: Nature Coast.

HERNANDO CHRISTIAN (0-2) AT WINTER GARDEN CALVARY CHRISTIAN (0-0)

WHEN: 7:30 p.m.

THE SKINNY: Is this the night for the young Lions? Though outscored 113-0 in two losses, tonight HCA plays a fellow independent that has four games on its entire schedule.

SCHWARB'S PICK: Calvary Christian.

NIPPS'S PICK: Calvary Christian.
