Ottawa defenseman Zdeno Chara, a finalist for the Norris Trophy last season, signed a contract with Farjestad of the Swedish Elite League Friday, two days after the team agreed to a deal with Montreal defenseman Sheldon Souray, Canadian television network TSN reported.
The 6-foot-9 Chara finished second to Scott Niedermayer of the Devils in the Norris voting after recording career highs in goals (16) and points (41) in 79 games. His plus-33 rating was third best in the league.
Since joining the Senators in 2001, Chara is a league-high plus-92. He was acquired from the Islanders with Bill Muckalt and the second overall draft pick (Jason Spezza) for Alexei Yashin.
FLAMES: Forward Martin Gelinas signed a one-year contract with Morges of the Swiss Elite League. He has a clause that will allow him to return to Calgary when the lockout is over.
PANTHERS: Defenseman Branislav Mezei agreed to a deal with Trinec of the Czech Republic.
RANGERS: Forward Michael Nylander signed with the Finnish team Karpat Oulu and will play until the lockout ends.
