Senior center provides a time for social play

(ran East Lake & Oldsmar edition)

The Oldsmar Senior Center welcomes seniors ages 50 or older to a morning social from 9 a.m. to noon on Wednesdays and Fridays. The coffee, doughnuts and bagels are free with an Oldsmar recreation card, $5 without a card.

"For a number of the people who come here, this is their only social activity," said Robert Kerce, senior recreation coordinator at the center.

Kerce said quite a few are widows or widowers and many are Italian-Americans from New York City.

"I do have fun with them," he said.

On a recent Wednesday, the seniors were intent on games of poker, as well as Rummikub, a version of rummy played with tiles instead of cards.

At the table closest to the door, Rocky De Carolis of Oldsmar, 96, was playing poker for pennies. He said he's been coming to the socials twice a week for six years.

"Take this away from me, take away my bread and butter," he said. "I look forward to it."

One group caught up on cruise news as they finished their games.

Nancy Kelley of Tampa will be cruising to Hawaii.

"Oh, wonderful!" said Shirley Pfeffer of Dunedin. "I loved it. I'd go again in a minute."

And before he left, De Carolis took a look at the pennies filling his glass jar.

"It looks like I won," he said.
