Officer critically wounded when suspect opens fire

A police officer was shot and critically wounded Sunday while responding to a disturbance call, officials said. A suspect was taken into custody after a standoff.

Officer William McGary, a 22-year veteran of the Fort Lauderdale force, was listed in critical condition after surgery at Broward General Medical Center. He was shot around 1 a.m. Sunday, officials said.

John G. Yanosik, 46, was arrested three hours later and charged with aggravated assault with a firearm, according to the Broward Sheriff's Office. Yanosik was held at the Broward Main Jail.

A 911 caller said a white man was yelling racial slurs from his balcony to a black woman who also lived in the apartment building. McGary was one of three officers to respond to the scene.

Police Sgt. Al Lewers said a suspect opened fire on two officers, injuring McGary.

Yanosik allegedly barricaded himself inside his apartment after the shooting, and emerged only after gas canisters were fired into his residence, officials said.
