Racing to a 16-4 lead after one quarter, Plant rolled to a 62-24 victory against Middleton in a Class 5A, District 8 game on Tuesday.
The Panthers (12-1) used a fullcourt press to consistently deny the inbounds pass and turn steals into quick baskets.
"I think it really came together for us," said junior Liz Colby, whose team-leading 14 points was more than double her 5.5 average entering the game. "Everything seemed to click, both on offense and defense."
Coach Carrie Mahon said Plant appears ready for a run at last season's 22-5 record, which included a trip to the state semifinals.
"We have a nice club, perhaps even more athletic than last year's," Mahon said. "But we need to develop more leadership. We are young, and poise is the one ingredient you must possess to go deep into the playoffs."
Middleton (2-6) was led by Ronika Grace's nine points.
"We are young, but we are learning," coach Mark Jones said. "I saw some good things, and now we have to build on the positives and eliminate mistakes."
Junior Porscha Williamson led Plant in the second half, making four 3-pointers. And teammate Kiersten Hanna finished with 10 points.
