The Hernando County Health Department has announced that bacteriological test results show the water quality at Pine Island Beach is in the poor range. An advisory has been issued, which means water contact may pose an increased risk of infectious disease, particularly for susceptible individuals. There were a lot of sea gulls on the beach when the samples were taken, said environmental manager Albert Gray. "We don't know for sure. But we think there is a correlation between the birds and the tests," Gray said. "It's probably because of bird feces." The department will take new samples on Monday and, depending on the results, will rescind or continue the advisory, Gray said. For information, call Gray at 540-6802.
