Terrapins even score against Jaguars, 2-1

Tampa Prep survived a late surge to get a little revenge with a 2-1 win over rival Academy of the Holy Names Friday night.

The Terrapins, who lost 4-3 to Academy earlier this season, took a two-goal lead early in the second half on a goal by sophomore Jessica Peterson.

An Academy goal in the final minute made things interesting, but the Terrapins withstood a few scoring chances with just seconds left.

"The girls were hungry tonight," Tampa Prep coach Pam Smith said. "The girls wanted this game. We've kind of been waiting for this one. We don't play a lot of teams twice. We were pretty hungry to play this team again."

Tampa Prep opened the scoring in the 21st minute when junior Amanda Curley sent a pass to sophomore Kwynn Kirkhuff, who had space at the top of the box. Kirkhuff gathered the ball and sent a low shot past Academy goalkeeper Merrelyn Hoeneymeyer just inside the far post.

In the 48th minute, Peterson, who had several near goals, put the Terrapins up by two with a low line drive in the left corner.

Academy's Marissa Guagliardo got the goal in the final minute. She approached the net from the right side of the box and lifted a shot that bounced just off the fingertips of Tampa Prep goalkeeper Anne Hutchinson.

"They were complacent in the first half and the beginning of the second half," Academy coach Dave Smith said of his team. "It's our way. They don't seem to think they have to play early. Tampa Prep took their chances."
