Jets survive blunder, overtime and Chargers

Doug Brien's 28-yard field goal with five seconds remaining in overtime gave the New York Jets a 20-17 win over the San Diego Chargers in the AFC wild-card game Saturday night.

Brien's winning kick came after San Diego's Nate Kaeding missed a 40-yard field goal in overtime. The Chargers forced the overtime period on Drew Brees's 1-yard touchdown pass to Antonio Gates with 11 seconds left in regulation.

One play earlier, Brees couldn't connect on a fourth-down pass in the end zone but Jets linebacker Eric Barton was called for a personal foul for striking Brees in the helmet with his elbow. The 15-yard penalty gave the Chargers a first-and-goal.

Chad Pennington threw two touchdown passes as New York won in San Diego for the second time this season.
