A 68-year-old man was killed after he was struck by a car in Pinellas Park on Saturday morning, authorities said.
Llewellyn Sweetland, a summer resident from Canada, was driving a Dodge Caravan north on 71st Street N about 5:10 a.m., according to the Florida Highway Patrol. He stopped in the inside lane near 68th Avenue N and got out of the car, said FHP spokesman Larry Coggins.
Sweetland was heading to a flea market, where he had a booth on Saturday mornings, Coggins said. His car was packed with materials he planned to sell, and he may have gotten out to readjust them, Coggins said.
A 34-year-old Pinellas Park woman, Deanna Brady, was traveling north on 71st Street N. She, too, was traveling in the inside lane. She saw Sweetland's car and tried to swerve, but struck Sweetland and the left rear of his car, Coggins said.
Sweetland died at the scene, authorities said.
He had stopped directly in the road, not at a stop sign or traffic light, authorities said.
