Police still not certain on ID of intruder killed at gem show

Police said Monday they still do not know the identity of a robber shot to death when he broke into a jewelry show at the Coliseum on Sunday.

A security guard killed the man when he and another person pried opened the back door of the Coliseum about 2:30 a.m.. The guard fired several shots at the intruders, who were wearing ski masks.

Police spokesman George Kajtsa said detectives were still verifying the name of the man who died at Bayfront Medical Center. Police described him only as a 31-year-old Hispanic male from outside the Tampa Bay area. Police are still searching for the second robber, who fled the scene.

Police also did not release the name of the security guard, citing an ongoing investigation.

The guard with S & S Security was protecting gems, jewelry, silver and porcelain kept overnight by about 100 vendors for the show at the Coliseum in downtown St. Petersburg.
