Bush defends speechwriter's hiring

Gov. Jeb Bush on Tuesday defended the hiring of a former editorial writer once accused of plagiarism and sexual harassment.

Bush said he was confident his communications staff properly vetted Lloyd Brown, former editorial page editor of the Florida Times-Union, before offering him a job last month as a speechwriter.

Brown joined Bush's staff just weeks after retiring from the newspaper, which had revealed it found instances of plagiarism in some editorials Brown wrote. The paper's review was prompted by a former employee's article in an alternative weekly that said in 1998 she complained to managers that Brown constantly viewed pornography at work.

"The communications office looked at the allegations and spoke to his employer, and we're confident that the allegations that were in Folio Weekly were not quite accurate," Bush said. "The fact is Mr. Brown served and was employed by the newspaper for four or five years after the allegations were made.

"I'm happy he's on our team," Bush added."He's a good writer and he's a conservative, which I appreciate because I'm one."

Lawsuit says nursing home let man die

JACKSONVILLE _ A widow is suing an Orange Park nursing home, saying a do-not-resuscitate order meant for her husband's roommate was mistakenly placed in his file, resulting in his death.

Frances Daniel sued Doctors Lake of Orange Park nursing home in Clay Circuit Court.

Lloyd Daniel, 81, collapsed Feb. 15 while nurses were getting him out of bed. One nurse began CPR, but they were then told about the do-not-resuscitate form, a Clay County Sheriff's Office report stated. Daniel was covered up and left alone.

When it was discovered the order was put in his file by mistake, Daniel was taken by Clay County paramedics to Orange Park Medical Center, where he died. A heart attack was ruled the cause.
