Man shot during robbery; police seek two suspects

A man was shot late Monday after two armed robbers broke into his house in the Lake Maggiore Shores neighborhood of St. Petersburg, police said.

Police said two men in ski masks broke into a house at 1900 21st St. S about 11:40 p.m., demanding jewelry and money. When the resident, Benjamin Philyor, 43, reached for one of the guns, he was shot twice.

Police said the Philyor's gunshot wounds were not life-threatening. He was taken to Bayfront Medical Center, treated and released.

Police are still looking for the two robbers. Anyone with information should call Sgt. Al White at (727) 893-7263.

Urban living may replace

dilapidated landmark

TAMPA _ Managed health care executive Pradip C. Patel's purchase of the old Maas Brothers building could bring more residential development to the core of downtown Tampa.

Patel last month paid $3.8-million for three of four parcels on the city block that holds the Maas Brothers building, the retail landmark that presided over the heart of the city's business district from 1886 until 1991. It has been vacant ever since, falling into disrepair and facing a demolition order from the city since 2000.

Patel said he's likely to put residences and commercial space on the land, but Tuesday he had no details on the project.

"It's too preliminary. We have a lot of planning to do and need to find a developer," he said. "We'll know in two or three months where we're headed."
