Carey Frank Smoak, a lifelong Citrus resident and influential building contractor, died Saturday (Jan. 8, 2005) at Surrey Place Convalescent Center in Lecanto. He was 94.
Mr. Smoak was born in Floral City and went on to become a partner in Smoak & Ogden Construction Co. and later with Smoak & White Construction.
He built many homes and was among the original contractors at Booker T. Washington School, now Inverness Middle School. Mr. Smoak also was instrumental in building the Inverness Golf and Country Club (of which he was a charter member), Citrus Memorial Hospital, Inverness City Hall and many other downtown buildings.
In 2001, the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce presented Mr. Smoak with the Charles B. Fitzpatrick Heritage Award.
Mr. Smoak also served as an elder at First Presbyterian Church of Inverness and helped supervise the construction of its new sanctuary.
A funeral service will be at 2 p.m. Friday at First Presbyterian.
