The man who died Sunday after he broke into a jewelry show at the Coliseum is a 31-year-old Colombian who was in the United States illegally, police said Tuesday.
Jose Gregoria Gomez-Losano died from wounds after a security guard at the Coliseum shot him, police said.
An armed Gomez-Losano and another unidentified man pried open a back door at the Coliseum in downtown St. Petersburg about 2:30 a.m. Sunday, setting off alarms, police said. An on-duty security guard, who was protecting gems and jewelry on display at the show, confronted the men and fired shots.
Gomez-Losano was struck and taken to Bayfront Medical Center, where he died. The second intruder escaped, and police have not found him.
Police said Gomez-Losano had no known address in the area and lived in the United States illegally.
The security guard who shot him declined through his employer to discuss the shooting, which is being reviewed by prosecutors. Police did not release the guard's name.
