Hernando High's Air Force Junior ROTC was given the Superintendent's and School Board's Site Recognition Award for ranking in the top 10 percent of the 746 units within the United States. Under the leadership of Col. Jim Crigger and Sgt. Hugh Flournoy, the unit met program goals and Air Force requirements to achieve the distinction.

The Superintendent's and School Board's Site Recognition Award was also presented to principal Marcia Austin on behalf of J.D. Floyd Elementary for adding "an Environmental Science Center for fifth- and sixth-grade students, raising the student population to 1,367."

The center was also cited for its activities, most notably, "motivating and educational field trips and inspirational guest speakers such as the visit from Dr. Howard Rosenbaum, a conservation biologist who shared his research on humpback whales in Madagascar."

Nominees for the Hernando County Teacher of the Year have been submitted to the Hernando County Education Foundation.

Jim Crigger, Hernando High; Jeanne Lashley, Moton Elementary; Trevor Barlow, Nature Coast Technical High; Hil-Dee Fisher, Pine Grove Elementary; Rosemarie Shaeffer, Powell Middle; Elizabeth Rodriguez, Suncoast Elementary; Cynthia Loscalzo, Spring Hill Elementary; Becky Vonada, Springstead High; Calvin Brown, STAR Education Center; Don Kern, West Hernando Middle; Michele Rittenberry, Westside Elementary.
