Two brothers held in a Louisiana jail said Saturday that they killed a Hillsborough County woman last month, a newspaper reported Sunday.
The Baton Rouge Advocate quoted West Baton Rouge Parish Sheriff Mike Cazes as saying that Daniel Garcia, 35, and Michael Garcia, 27, told a Hillsborough sheriff's detective they killed Bessie Jane Davies during a robbery.
The men were held there in connection with a homicide and rape.
Hillsborough sheriff's spokeswoman Debbie Carter would not comment Sunday on the story, but she said a detective did travel to Louisiana on Saturday to interview "one individual" in the slaying of Davies, a Gibsonton gas station cashier.
Carter said the Davies slaying remained an active investigation with no charges pending.
"At this time we have no suspects," she said. "We sent someone up there and they conducted interviews, and that's it."
Davies, 58, was discovered Jan. 13 in her home, a parsonage next to the Gibsonton United Methodist Church.
She had been dead a few days, a medical examiner said, from upper body trauma.
In a bizarre turn, less than 36 hours after deputies found Davies' body, her car was stolen and set on fire and her home burglarized.
The Garcias, of Lansing, Mich., and a third man, James E. Nelson II, have been charged in Louisiana with the murder of Michael Millican, 32, and the rape of his fiancee.
Nelson, 21, is from Florida, according to the paper.
Millican was slain outside an abandoned gas station in Port Allen, in the West Baton Rouge Parish. His body was found badly beaten, with multiple stab wounds to the chest, the Advocate reported.
