Kurtis Shultz was named assistant strength and conditioning coach. He will assist Mike Morris, who was promoted to strength and conditioning coach after a contract was not offered to Garrett Giemont. Shultz was the strength and conditioning coach for Minnesota.

BILLS: New coach Dick Jauron said he'll open the starting quarterback job to a competition this spring between incumbent J.P. Losman and Kelly Holcomb.

CARDINALS: Quarterback Kurt Warner signed a three-year contract, with financial terms not disclosed. Warner, 34, who started 10 games for the Cardinals in an injury-shortened 2005 season, will enter training camp as the starter.

49ERS: Former Bucs assistant Johnnie Lynn was hired to help coach defensive backs. Lynn, Tampa Bay's secondary coach in 1994 and 1995, spent the past two seasons coaching the secondary in Baltimore and has had various other assistant jobs.

VIKINGS: A plea deal that allowed Ted Brown, a Minnesota running back from 1979-86, to avoid trial on sexual misconduct charges was thrown out. The three-judge appeals panel said District Court Judge Michael Jesse was wrong to allow the plea over the objections of a prosecutor. The appeals court sent the case back to Mille Lacs County for further proceedings.
