Personal information on 27,000 current and former Blue Cross and Blue Shield of Florida employees, contractors and vendors was transmitted illegally to a contractor's home computer, the Jacksonville insurer said Wednesday.
A spokeswoman said the company detected the security breach, which occurred this month, within 24 hours. Blue Cross notified the FBI and blocked computer access to the responsible person, who has not been identified or charged.
The company said it has no reason to think the data, which included names and Social Security numbers of company badge-holders, was transmitted beyond the home computer. No customer or personal health information was included.
Blue Cross has notified employees and others affected by the incident and is offering one free year of credit monitoring and a hot line to respond to concerns.
