Bush: Need to keep Scripps promises

Gov. Jeb Bush said Wednesday officials and private developers in north Palm Beach County must work quickly to turn their promises to Scripps Research Institute into contracts or risk losing the project. Bush's comments came a day after county commissioners approved Jupiter and the adjacent Briger parcel for Scripps' permanent campus. "We need to be sure that promises made are promises kept," he said. "Because if it turns out they can't quite do (those things), Scripps will leave and that is the last thing we want to have happen." Bush had favored a Boca Raton site for Scripps. Bush will be in Boca Raton today to announce a partnership between Scripps and IBM.

Maritrans stock price drops 12 percent

Stock of Tampa-based Maritrans, which ships crude oil and petroleum products, fell more than 12 percent Wednesday after fourth quarter earnings fell short of analysts' estimates. Operating margins for the quarter slipped because of higher-than-expected voyage and operating costs, wrote analyst Chaz G. Jones of Morgan Keegan & Co. The company's stock closed Wednesday at $22.05 a share, down $3.14, in heavy trading.

Ikea to open Broward County store in 2007

Ikea, the Swedish discount furniture chain, said it will open its first store in Florida near Sawgrass Mills outlet mall in western Broward County in 2007. Ikea, which has more catalog customers in Florida than any other state where it has no presence, had plans for a store in Sunrise that was to open this year, but that deal fell through. Several mall developers in the Tampa Bay area, where Ikea has 21,000 catalog customers, have been trying to land the retailer. Ikea is building a distribution center in Savannah, Ga.

First Advantage

buys SkillCheck

First Advantage Corp. of St. Petersburg has acquired SkillCheck Inc. of Burlington, Mass., for an undisclosed sum. SkillCheck, which started in 1988, provides pre-employment testing and skills assessment and has more than 15,000 installed users worldwide. First Advantage said SkillCheck will become part of its Hiring Solutions Group, which includes divisions that offer applicant tracking software and recruiting services. The group will be headed by Rick Mansfield, former chief marketing officer of First Advantage.

Clear Channel picks CFO as president

Clear Channel Communications Inc. Wednesday said it named chief financial officer Randall Mays as president, effective immediately. Randall Mays replaces Mark Mays as president. Mark Mays remains chief executive.
