DAILY DISPATCHES FROM TURIN

Published Feb. 16, 2006

JROMANO: The Italians are nothing if not eclectic in their musical tastes. A radio station played the relatively obscure Bruce Springsteen cut Murder Inc. and then followed with Roger Miller's King of the Road, which I hadn't heard since my father got rid of his record collection in the 1970s. I figured the next song would be either Marty Robbins or U2. It was Cat Stevens.

GSHELTON: Give it to those plucky Italians. They know how to throw a hockey tournament. On Wednesday, the Palasport Olympico was rocking when the Italians scored their first goal to briefly tie Canada. Flags waved, the cheerleaders danced in the aisles and the p.a. blared that Italian standard: James Brown's I Feel Good. Italy lost 7-2, but it didn't matter. The fans may still be dancing.
