Progress Energy Inc.

The Raleigh, N.C., parent of Progress Energy Florida of St. Petersburg said its earnings in the quarter ended Dec. 31 fell because of higher operating and maintenance costs. Progress said it expects to increase capital spending at its utilities in Florida and the Carolinas by 32 percent in 2006 to $1.58-billion. The company also said it expects 2006 ongoing earnings, which exclude charges, of $3.15 to $3.35 a share, up from $2.70 in 2005.
