Ted Williams was an honored guest at the Devil Rays' first game at Tropicana Field. Now some of his most prized memorabilia will be on display there permanently.
An announcement is expected Thursday that the Ted Williams Museum & Hitters Hall of Fame will open an extensive permanent display inside the Trop.
The museum, which opened in 1994, is based in the Citrus County city of Hernando, near where Williams had a home before he died in 2002. While it has attracted some big-name guests and been a popular tourist destination, the museum's location has been an issue. An increasing number of events have been held off-site, including relocation of the annual induction ceremonies to Fort Myers.
There has been talk in recent years of closing the Citrus site and relocating the museum to Boston, where a satellite site has opened. But the expected deal with the Devil Rays will keep the prime exhibits in the Tampa Bay area.
