Easing the stress of competition

Published Feb. 22, 2006

Steven Bourland, 15, takes his Rhode Island Red chicken, Homer, out of the poultry barn for some fresh air Friday night at the Florida State Fair in Tampa, after a day of competing in poultry classes. "She's had a very stressful day," he said. A sophomore from Chamberlain High School, he is secretary of the school's FFA chapter and wants to become a veterinarian. Bourland raised Homer from an egg as a school project, but now she mostly stays at his home in North Tampa. "She's kind of a city chicken," he said. This is Bourland's first time showing chickens - he showed a pig last year.
