Two young girls were killed Monday afternoon when a commercial truck drove into the path of a Ford pickup on State Road 33, Lakeland police said.
Morgan Bryant, 9, and a friend died in the accident, Lakeland police Sgt. Tony Lewis said. The second girl's identity was not immediately released.
Morgan's mother, Carla Bryant, 36, was taken to Lakeland Regional Medical Center with critical injuries, said police spokesman Gary Gross.
According to a preliminary investigation, Bryant was driving north on SR 33 when the truck, heading south on SR 33, turned in front of her.
The truck driver, John Mitchell, was not injured, police said.
