All-Star right fielder Bobby Abreu, the Phillies' last regular to report to spring training, just doesn't believe the offseason gossip that new general manager Pat Gillick shopped him in attempts to land a top-of-the-rotation starter.
"It was a rumor and I think it was untrue because (the Phillies) should have come to me and talked about it," Abreu said Tuesday after the team's first full-squad workout. "I have the no-trade clause, so I can say yes or no. (Gillick) never called me, and the reason I believe he never called me was because there was no intention to trade me."
ET CETERA: The Phillies will hold their annual spring Phan Fest starting at 5:30 p.m. Friday at Bright House Networks Field. Admission is free. Hall of Famer Mike Schmidt will join the team as a special hitting instructor on Sunday and stay through March 4.
