Liability limit advances

A defendant who is 10 percent responsible for an accident shouldn't get stuck paying 100 percent of the damages in a lawsuit, supporters of a bill that would change the way fault is apportioned said Wednesday.

The House Justice Council approved House Bill 145, which would get rid of a law that can result in someone found partly responsible in negligence lawsuits having to pay all of the damages if other responsible parties can't.

The vote was 8-2. A vote by the full House could come soon after the legislative session opens; the bill is a priority for the business lobby and Speaker Allan Bense.
