Two manatees were released Wednesday at Tampa Electric Co.'s Big Bend Power Station manatee viewing area. They were released by Tampa's Lowry Park Zoo, where they had been in care of the zoo's manatee hospital. Assisting in the release was the Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission's Fish and Wildlife Research Institute. The manatee named Parker is being released in this photo, with Long Bayou being released a few minutes later. The two were transported by truck to the viewing center in Apollo Beach. The area near the viewing center is a favorite for manatees in the winter because of the warm discharge waters from the electric generating plant off U.S. 41.
