Riverview woman accused of leaving fatal crash scene

RIVERVIEW - Deputies arrested a 36-year-old Riverview woman Tuesday and charged her with leaving the scene of an accident that killed a Tulsa man.

Karen Ann Hartley of 11908 Gordon Drive was arrested at her home after deputies received a tip that she had a vehicle matching the description of the one investigators said struck Kelly Johme Ballard Sunday.

Ballard, 36, was found dead on the 8830 block of Nundy Avenue in Gibsonton about 7:30 a.m. Sunday. Hillsborough sheriff's deputies said Ballard died after he was struck by a white van.

Ballard told his family in Oklahoma he was headed to the Tampa area to interview for a job erecting and dismantling carnival equipment.

Hartley was being held at Orient Road Jail Wednesday in lieu of $7,500 bail.

Carter said Hartley did not give investigators any details about the incident.

Brooker Elementary student struck while riding bike

BRANDON - An 8-year-old Brooker Elementary student was hospitalized Wednesday after he was struck by a car while riding his bicycle through a crosswalk.

Brendon Penny was riding his bike with his 6-year-old brother, Bradley, when they crossed Brooker and Bryant roads. A 2000 Toyota traveling east on Brooker Road stopped at a stop sign and tried to turn north onto Bryant.

The Toyota, driven by Carol Ann Varner, 59, struck Brendon. He was taken to Tampa General Hospital, where a hospital official said he was in fair condition Wednesday night. No charges have been filed. Hillsborough sheriff's deputies are investigating, spokeswoman Debbie Carter said.
