Clearwater man is charged in fatal June car crash
A Clearwater man has been accused of killing a 65-year-old woman in a car accident last June while under the influence of drugs, authorities said.
Alberto Sanabria, 50, was arrested Tuesday morning on charges of DUI manslaughter, driving under the influence and driving with a suspended license. He was held at the Pinellas County Jail with bail set at $50,000.
According to authorities, Sanabria was driving about 70 mph on Interstate 275 near State Road 694 when he swerved into the emergency lane and crashed into a parked Chevrolet Sunbird that was waiting for a tow truck.
All four people in the Sunbird required medical attention, but only St. Petersburg resident Martha Harrell, 65, was killed.
After telling a Florida Highway Patrol trooper that he had taken cocaine earlier that weekend, Sanabria's blood tested positive for morphine, according to court records. Last week, the Pinellas-Pasco State Attorney's Office decided to press charges.
